"BMW established what was then a new segment of two-door, sporty compact sedans with the models of the BMW 02 Series. Although lots of technical components with almost the same construction were taken from the much larger sedans in the "New Class" ("Neue Klasse"), the BMW 02 Series conveyed a completely new sense of driving which embodied the new BMW slogan "Sheer Driving Pleasure" ("Aus Freude am Fahren").

The BMW 2002 Touring (designation from model year 1973, previously BMW Touring 2000) is the best-selling model of the newly introduced body version with a production run of more than 15,900 units. The engineering is based on the BMW 2002. Although the four-cylinder inline engine fitted with a Solex downdraught carburettor delivered 30 hp less than the injection version supplied in the BMW 2002 tii Touring, an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10.9 sec was nevertheless an impressive performance."
