"The 745i was a performance focused variant of the E23 BMW 7 Series that was introduced for 1980. Exclusive to the European market, the rear wheel drive 745i initially featured a turbocharged 3.2L version of BMW's M30 inline six engine, but in 1982, BMW introduced their M106 engine, and began fitting it to the 745i.

This 3.4L turbocharged engine generated the same power as the original engine, but delivered at lower RPMs. Both engines were only available with automatic transmissions, although the original engine was paired to a 3 speed, while the M106 was paired to a 4 speed automatic."
